My Online Community

I normally post under the name webmouse and am happy to discuss most anything as long as it doesn't drift into flames and heated debate. Lately most of my online community time has been spent on SciFi interests, but I also post to genealogical bulletin boards. For the latter boards I post under Ellen Wilds or ESWilds.

Bulletin Boards & Forums
  • My favorite board is www.ascifi.com -- lots of intelligent and stimulating discussion covering the whole range of television and film on a variety of programs, including science fiction, fantasy, and anime.

  • Another board is www.gaters.net -- devoted to the Stargate series and containing news, interviews, information, as well as posts and chat.

  • The genealogy board I visit is Rootsweb.Com, Genforum, hosted by FamilyTreeMaker.Com. I no longer can recommend the services at www.ancestry.com. Ancestry.Com -- while full of information -- has complicated rules about changing or cancelling one's subscription. They depend on telephone and email communication only, rolling the subscription over to the next year unless specifically told not to by telephone by a certain date. The offer of "free time" is a ploy to keep you subscribed past the due date, after which they charge for the entire year even if you cancel. Because of these shady practices they have lost me as a customer and I hope that others will heed my warning and stay away from them.

Chatrooms
  • There are two chatrooms I frequent. Both are Stargate related, although the conversations range over a variety of topics. Since both chats are in the United Kingdom, the best time to log on (assuming you're in the US is around 3pm EST, thus catching the Brits around 8pm). The main chat I visit is at Stargate & Beyond. I also visit StargateSG-1uk.

  • The SciFi Channel has a chatroom, but I've never found the right time when anyone else was logged on.
